The volume features images from the extraordinary collection of the photo library of the École biblique et archéologique française of Jerusalem. The vintage materials of the photo library include more than 18.000 images produced with the aim of documenting the architectural and archaeological heritage not only of the area around Jerusalem but also other parts of the Holy Land and the neighbouring countries, such as Egypt, Jordan and Syria. These photographs were often taken for the publication of informative books or scientific articles, and are therefore characterised by the objectivity necessary for the study of real data. The images document a unique urban panorama, in which the historical testimonies of conflicting cultural and religious traditions, forced to live side by side for centuries, intertwine inextricably, offering a fascinating glimpse of the cultural and religious stratification of the city of Jerusalem.
